Bernard Tan
Pianist/Baritone
Hailing from Malaysia, Bernard Tan is a passionate collaborative pianist with a great interest in song accompaniment and vocal coaching. His vocal accompaniment experiences include Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours 2014 (Taiwan), 6th ASEAN Singing Competition (Thailand), and Malaysia National Singing Competition Grand Finals, among others. He has also accompanied voice graduation recitals in various universities in Malaysia. In 2015, he participated in the Winter Journey Opera and Song Workshop in Thailand and has been coached by Michael Hampton of the Royal College of Music, and was awarded the Best Accompanist. Bernard has performed in masterclasses by renowned artists such as Iain Burnside, Anna Tilbrook and Ng Chong Lim, and was coached by Elaine Pao and Geneviene Wong in song accompanying. In 2013-2015, Bernard was the pianist of Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO), and has performed under the baton of Kevin Field and Fabian Russell in Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP). He has also performed as chamber pianist in the MPYO-MPO Chamber Concert Series and Music Jamboree 2015.
Raised in Seremban, Malaysia, Bernard began studying the piano from age 6 under Chen Chit Shian in Melody Music School. In 2007, he came under the tutelage of Woon Chi Choong, whereby he obtained the Licentiate Diplomas of Trinity College of London (LTCL, piano recital with Distinction) and Royal Schools of Music (LRSM, piano performance). In 2012, Bernard took part in the 6th Roland Music Festival in the Open Classical Solo Category and emerged as the First Runner-Up. In the previous festival, he was the First Runner-Up in the Piano Duet Category.
Bernard completed undergraduates with First Class Honours from University Putra Malaysia (UPM), under the tutelage of Carolyn Lo. Currently, he is pursuing Master of Music in Piano Accompaniment at Birmingham Conservatoire, United Kingdom, under the tutelage of Robin Bowman and Robert Markham. In the conservatoire, Bernard has been actively involved in various musical activities. He has accompanied in the Conservatoire Singing Prize, Edward Brooks Lieder Prize and Monday Showcase Recital. In competitions, he was the winner of the John Ireland Prize (with baritone Andrew Randall) and was awarded second prize in the Delia Hall Accompanist Prize.
As a baritone himself, Bernard is a fond lover of Western classical vocal music. He took up singing under Woon Chi Choong and passed ABRSM Grade 8 in Singing with Distinction in 2008. He later also studied voice under soprano Ang Mei Foong and tenor Dr. Yap Jin Hin. Besides, Bernard is also a conductor and bassoonist.
