Michael Chun Ting Lam, baritone, was born in Hong Kong. Lam is currently pursuing his Masters of Music Degree at Birmingham Conservatoire, with the generous support of Opera Hong Kong K Wah International Vocal Scholarship, Foundation for the Arts and Music in Asia Limited (FAMA) Vocal Scholarships and Birmingham Conservatoire Scholarship Fund. Lam obtained his Bachelor of Music Degree from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2015. Lam has studied singing with Cheng Yuk Man, Gerald Hon, David Quah and is currently receiving the guidance of Gwion Thomas.
Passionate about opera, Lam has sung complete operatic roles as Bottom in Britten's A midsummer night's dream, the forester in Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen, Count Almaviva in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and Dr Blind in Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts productions; Death in Holst’s Sāvitri and Le fauteuil in Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges in Birmingham Conservatoire productions. Outside the Conservatoires, Lam has sung the Young Man 3 in Huang Ruo's Dr. Sun Yat-Sen (world premiere) for Opera Hong Kong, Baron Douphol in Verdi's La Traviata for Musica Viva and Colline in Puccini’s La bohème for Midland Opera. He has also sung main roles in excerpts from different operas, including Marcello in Puccini's La bohème, Papageno and Sarastro in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Belcore in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore and Figaro in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Other performances he has sung within include Menotti's Amahl and the night visitors, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Bizet's Carmen, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci.
Lam has also performed actively as a concert soloist. His past concert engagements include the bass solo in Haydn's Nelson Mass with The Really Big Chorus and Hong Kong Police Choir, the baritone solo in J.S. Bach's Magnificat in D Major with Hong Kong Oratorio Society, HKOS Cantata Singers and HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers and, the baritone and bass solo in Felix Mendelssohn's Die erste Walpurgisnacht with Hong Kong Oratorio Society. Lam has also performed as the bass soloist in Handel's Messiah Sing-along Concert organized by SingFest Choral Academy.
Besides performing as a singer, Lam frequently appears as a Zhongruanist. He started learning Zhongruan at the age of twelve and obtained the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Grade 8 Certificate in Zhongruan performance within a short space of time. He has studied Ruan, Liuqin, Sanxian and Pipa with Chu Man Kuen, Kwan Hau Man, David Chan and Kitty Lee. He was the leader and the principal Zhongruanist of Ng Wah Chinese Orchestra, and a Ruanist of Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Bright East Chinese Orchestra and Si Ya Chamber Orchestra.
Prior to studying in the UK, Lam received a number of scholarships from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts due to his excellence of work. These include: Hong Kong Welsh Male Choir Scholarship, the Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund, Mr Ng Fung Chow Memorial Scholarships, The Hong Kong Children's Choir Chan Ho Choi Memorial Scholarship and Michael Rippon Memorial Scholarship. Lam has also won numerous prizes in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival including the First Prize of Miss Barbara Fei Vocal Prize Final (Open) and Operatic Solo. In 2015, Lam has won the First Prize of the 2nd Hong Kong International Music Festival Vocal Competition and the Excellent Prize of the 3rd Asian International Vocal Festival International Opera Contest. In 2016, Lam has won the First Prize in the International Music Competition 'London' Grand Prize Virtuoso
